Hello Reader, Congrats on surviving 2024. Now 2025 beckons you to take a break and celebrate! We wish you the best year ever! To kick off, we thought it would be fun to predict some interesting trends that might shape residential design in the coming year. Let's see how our visions align. Here's a short quiz.
What technology is most likely to be integrated into living walls?
a) Solar panels b) Air purification systems c) Holographic displays
What feature is NOT expected in multifunctional spaces?
a) Modular furniture b) Soundproof pods c) Built-in treadmills
What's a key characteristic of sustainable luxury in 2025?
a) Minimalist design b) Energy-positive systems c) Vintage furniture Here are our predictions. Question 1: (b) Air purification systems. With biophilic design growing in popularity, it seems that living walls would naturally have technology built-in that purifies a home's indoor air. For example, Moss Pure claims a patent-pending technology that filters air within minutes and is 60% more efficient than tabletop air filters. Panels start at $434. In England, Carbelim has developed the Living Wall Panel™, an air purification system that utilizes cutting-edge, nature-based micro-algae technology. Question 2: (c) Built-in treadmills. "Once I bought a treadmill, it’s the most expensive clothes hanger in my home." We've all heard that old joke. Therefore, we don't believe that's a new multifunctional innovation. LOL However, with remote work likely to remain, it would not be surprising to see more modular furniture systems that can transform a space from an office to a gym to a guest room. San Francisco-based Bumblebee transforms spaces with innovative modular units that seamlessly descend from the ceiling, redefining how rooms are utilized. If you've attended an event at a local conference center, you've likely seen private meeting pods and soundproof booths for video calls and focused work. Homes have always had niches, so it's reasonable to expect this commercial feature to be found in our homes. We can also see more hidden tech integration for seamless transitions between work and leisure. Question 3: (b) Energy-positive systems. The concept of net zero has advanced rapidly —it went from science to policy to mainstream in less than a decade. The movement has evolved, and the new goal is energy-positive home systems that generate more power than they use. Other topics we'd like to discuss in 2025 include water recycling systems disguised as artistic water features. Hydroloop stealthily turns shower water into toilet flushes and garden water. But it's all done behind (or below) the scenes. What would be a New Year's Day prediction without mentioning artificial intelligence? We expect it to play a bigger role in creating tailored living spaces, such as AI-powered color and pattern matching, smart home systems that learn and adapt to residents' preferences, and improved augmented reality tools that allow clients to "experience" designs like when specifying products and with life-size floor plan walkthroughs & visualization centers. We hope this glimpse into the future of residential design inspires you for the year ahead. Here's to a creative and successful 2025!

Hello Reader, Spatial hierarchy in architecture is all about using hierarchy to draw attention to specific visual elements. It’s one of the key tools building designers use to shape how people experience their creations. Along with other principles like rhythm and repetition, hierarchy creates impact by separating a building from its overall theme or design. The human eye is naturally drawn to elements such as size, color, shape, and placement, instinctively seeking patterns or detecting...
