We have a packed lineup of webinars coming up and we don’t want you to miss a single one. Here’s everything on the calendar: TODAY – CE Watch Party: Structural Engineer vs Architect – Design Meeting (1.0 P3-CE)Tuesday, April 28 | 2:00 PM EDT | 1 Hour A structural engineer is a crucial part of the design team for all residential work in the studio — but how often do you actually get to sit in on that first meeting? In this CE Watch Party, you’ll join the kick-off meeting with the structural engineer as the team begins developing the structural design for the Outpost project. You’ll see how a foundation strategy is chosen, how framing and detail ideas are worked through, and how lateral loads are transferred and how they affect the materials chosen for building. The professional tug-of-war between engineer and architect isn’t adversarial — it’s collaborative and makes for a better, more efficient project. Around minute eighteen, Albert is asked to respond to one of the most common objections heard from contractors in the field: “This structure is way over-engineered.” His answer illuminates how a structural engineer can complement the architectural design process in ways you may not have anticipated. Because an engineer’s work is smaller in scope (their fee is typically about 10% of an architectural fee), they must secure 10 times the number of commissions to make a comparable income. This naturally exposes them to many more projects, ideas, and failures than an architect would typically see — and it’s those failures that are the most instructive. Structural engineering is more than sizing beams and designing connections; it’s an allied discipline that helps make the job of an architect easier and deliver a home that meets (and often exceeds) the client’s expectations. Earn 1.0 P3-CE just for watching. This is a watch party — no one will be on hand to answer questions, but the insight speaks for itself. Just in time for ARDA, right? Professional photos alone don’t win awards — great stories do. In this session, you’ll learn how to transform your project photos into a compelling visual narrative for your marketing portfolio AND your award submissions. She'll cover:
Roberta’s presentation will include time for Q&A at the end, so come prepared with questions and examples. Register here: AIBD.org/webinars Monday, May 19 – High-Performance Homes Team: A Practical Guide to Universal Home Design (1.0 P3-CE)May 19 | 2:00 PM EDT | 1 Hour What if “accessible design” wasn’t a code checkbox — but a lifestyle and marketability asset? The Practical Guide to Universal Home Design (by the Iowa Program for Assistive Technology) is an excellent resource for this roundtable because it shifts the conversation from “accessibility” as a code requirement to “universal design” as a lifestyle and marketability asset. For a group focused on high-performance homes, this document bridges the gap between structural efficiency and human longevity. Review the 20-page checklist in advance of the discussion: https://iowaat.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Practical-Guide-to-Universal-Home-Design.pdf You’ll walk away with new perspectives from across the design-build spectrum and earn 1.0 P3-CE in the process.
