  • Todd Stubendick (AARP Nebraska): Discusses national and local demographics, highlighting the growing population of older adults and the lack of accessible, affordable housing options. He also introduces an ADU design competition for Omaha.
  • Derek Miller (City of Omaha Planning Department): Outlines how ADUs fit into Omaha's zoning and planning codes, reviewing past regulations and recent city initiatives aimed at streamlining the permitting process to make ADUs more viable.
  • Richard Duncan (Universal Design Institute): Focuses on universal design principles for ADUs—such as step-free entrances, curbless showers, accessible kitchens, and wider doorways—to ensure homes remain safe and functional for older adults or individuals using mobility equipment.

The session concludes with the three answering questions and discussing topics like graded vs. ramped entrances, interior customizations, and neighborhood walkability.

AIBD Watch Parties are free to everyone.
