Housing affordability is a pressing issue across the United States and globally. To tackle this challenge while maintaining safety standards, the International Code Council (ICC) is taking a comprehensive look at the International Residential Code® (IRC). Their goal is to identify ways to reduce construction costs and streamline the code without compromising the life safety protections that keep homes secure. To drive this initiative forward, the ICC has established a Code Council Board IRC Review Committee (BIRC) and is appointing an Advisory Committee of leading building safety experts. They're also partnering with an independent research team from Clemson University, Western Michigan University, and San Jose State University bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise. How Your Voice MattersThe research team is starting their work by reaching out to professionals like you. They're actively seeking public input to pinpoint areas within the IRC that could benefit from improvement. By sharing your real-world experience, you can help shape the future of residential codes in ways that make sense for practitioners and jurisdictions while keeping safety front and center. This effort is part of ICC's larger commitment to supporting housing affordability through the I-Codes. The IRC is built as a prescriptive, self-contained code that reflects how residential construction actually happens. The review aims to keep it practical and grounded in real-world building practices without sacrificing its core mission as a safety-focused document. Your Action ItemHave a comment or suggestion?
